His father, Andrew Sr. gave (or sold) to David some land in Rowan (now Davidson) County, NC that was located between the Morgan's & Parr's on the waters of Hodges Fork of the Uwharrie.
In preparation for his exodus he sold his land - 16 September 1808 - David Fouts to Benjamin Fry, 155+ acres on waters of Uhary, bounding Arthur Parr, William Hughes * David Fouts by Andrew Fouts, Sr.../s/
David Fouts. Wit: E. Morgan, James Hughes, (Rowan Deeds 2:454 * 457). Soon thereafter, David moved to Clark Co., Indiana, in the company with his Parr relatives; also , brother Noah and his Wright relatives (present day Washington Co.)
Indiana Territory was organized in 1800 and the first section was in the extreme southern end, with Knox as the original county. Clark was created from Knox the following year in 1801 and covered a large area consisting of ten or more present day counties. Clark was divided in 1808 to form Harrison County. The Indiana Territory Land Office opened 1 May 1808 in Jeffersonville in Clark county.
No sooner did the Fouts arrive in Indiana Territory, when they were caught up in a set of circumstances that had it's beginning thousands of miles away. For a number of years the French and British had been engaged in a War on the high seas. Throughout President Thomas Jefferson's eight years in office, our new Republic had endeavored to remain neutral. However, both warring countries greatly hindered our commerce abroad, stopping and searching our ships, while the British removed any seamen they believed to be British subjects. James Madison became President in 1809 and, walking in the footsteps of Jefferson, sought to solve the foreign problem by methods that avoided war. On land no less than on the sea, the British were belligerent towards the United States. They protected the Indian Chief Tecumseh, who was terrifying the frontier by his forays on white settlements. Also, the Indians were supported by the French fur=trading interests that centered at Quebec. As the preying on American commerce continued, events seemed to take affairs out of President Madison's control and eventually War was declared on the British in 1812.
The early settlers in the Indiana Territory, on the outlying edge of our frontier, was caught up in this Indian trouble, and their only resources was to form local Militia's to protect their homes and lives. Many settlers retreated South and off the Frontier for the duration of the war (1812-1815). The Wright's crossed the Ohio river and stayed with the Sears family on the Kentucky shore. Others remained, taking their places in the defence of their homes and nation. Among these were David and Noah Fouts, who were commissioned on 21 March 1809 in the Clark County Militia. (Baird's "History of Clark County, Indiana"; also, on the list compiled by the Indiana State Library) A military "commission" indicated that you were accepting military responsibility and held a Grovener Commission, while every male 16-60 was a member of the militia.
David Fouts, "a resident of Indiana" made his first Entry SW1/4Q S6 T2N R5, entry No. 333, 22 December 1809. David was a Deacon & Secretary of Upper Blue River Baptist Church called "Sharon". Following a little difficulty with the Parr family, he resigned. David's second wife, Lavina Tadlock, was born in 1815 and died 1855. David's first child was born in 1800 and his last child was born in 1850 -- quite a man was David.
David was one of he first Justices of the Peace when Washington County was organized under Territorial Government. On 15 Sept 1815, David turned into the County Court $.50 he had fined Alexander Camron "for swearing on Sunday.

There is probably no more hospitable home within the limits of Edgar Township, than that occupied by Henry Harrison Fouts and his interesting family. He is a man, who, although, like most others has met with his reverses, yet has been enabled to extract much solid comfort from life and is disposed to make the best of circumstances. His farm 131 acres in extent, occupies a part of Sections 20, 21 and 28, the dwelling being on the first mentioned. The land is naturally fertile and under careful management yields a comfortable living for Henry and his family.
The Fouts family is of German descent and it is believed was first represented in American by the great-grandfather of Henry, who settled in Maryland and became the father of a a family among whom was Andrew who upon reaching manhood became owner of a plantation and slaves in North Carolina. He served as a soldier of the Revolutionary War and spent his last days in his native state. In the meantime he was married and became the father of a family, among his sons being David, the father of Henry Harrison Fouts, who was born in Guilford County, NC and upon reaching man's estate, cleared a farm from the timber. He likewise converted this into a plantation, principally devoted to tobacco. He left North Carolina, however, and emigrating to Indiana, settled among the earliest pioneers of Washington County, IN. By entry and purchase he became the owner of 1,200 acres of land and was prosperous. He served as a Justice of the Peace during the greater part of his residence there and was a prominent menter of the Baptist church. Politically, he was a Jackson Democrat of the strongest type. He died in 1856.
Henry attended school a few months in the winter season until a lad of fourteen years, then commenced Running on the Louisville Canal as "Grog boss". Three months of this life satisfied him and returning to "Terra Firma" he engaged in a wholesale coffee house at Louisville, KY., where he remained two years. Afterward he ran a store boat one year for another party and at the age of eighteen years commenced flatboating down the river to New Orleans. In 1832 he commenced running a snag boat in the Ohio River one year, making thirteen trips on the flat boats.
Finally Henry determined to change his occupation, and going to Carroll County, IN., in 1835 entered 160 aces of land. He cleared a part of this and operated it until in September, 1836, when he sold out and changed the scene of his operations to Delphi. Here he engaged as a carpenter, following this business three years. In the fall of 1839 he started out for Vermilion County, IN., overland by team, crossing the Wabash at Covington. He located in Clinton, Vemilion County, IN, and for a few years worked on a farm. In 1840 he repaired to Feeder Dam on the Eel River and took the contract for building a dam and three miles of a canal which occupied him three years. In the meantime he had associated himself with a partner who ran away with the money and consequently Henry returned to Clinton barren of resources.
Next Henry was found on the other side of the Mississippi in Lawrence County, Missouri, where he commenced trading with the Indians and where he sojourned for four years. He then came up into Vermillion County, IN., where he farmed until 1858 and that year changed his residence again to Young America Township, Edgar Co., IL. Here he rented land and began dealing in livestock, feeding and shipping at which he continued very successfully until 1871. That year he purchased fifty-six acres of land in Edgar Township and which was then in its wild state. He commenced its improvement and cultivation and added to it until it assumed the proportions of his present farm. He labored industriously many years, bringing the whole to a state of cultivation, building fences, setting out groves and an orchard and in the meantime carried on his livestock operations. He put up a house and barn and instituted two fish ponds, one of which is stocked with gold fish and another with German carp.
Mr. and Mrs. Fouts rejoice in the possession of thirty-six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. They contemplate the celebration of their golden wedding in February 1890.
Henry cast his first Presidential vote for Gen. Jackson and has since given his unwavering adhesion to the Democratic Party. He has served on the grand and petit juries, He was Justice of the Peace for several years, commissioner of Highways three years, and has been a School Director for the long period of thirty years. Socially, he belongs to the Bloomfield Lodge, No. 148, A.F.& A.M. at Chrisman, in which he has served as Deacon and is also a member of Edgar Chapter, No. 32. His estimable wife belongs to the Baptist Church of Chrisman. Nothing seems to suit them better than the entertainment of their many friends under their pleasant roof tree, while the stranger likewise receives cordial welcome and carries away with him pleasant remembrances of the Fouts family
Goar has first name only and states that all 12 children were born to the first wife Lucinda Manaugh and he puts second wife as Elizabeth Boxwell. The Fouts Newsletters with information regarding men who serviced in the Civil War list Elizabeth as the mother

Obit from Chrisman, IL, October 22, 1909
Elizabeth Boswell Fouts was born of Irish parents, Feb., 15, 1822 at Germantown, Stokes Co, NC and with her parents moved to Washington Co, IN in 1826. Shortly afterward she moved to Vermillion Co., IN, where she resided with her parents until her marriage to Henry Harrison Fouts, which occurred on Feb. 27, 1840, northeast of Clinton, Justice of the Peace Major Chun, officiating.
In 1843, she with her husband moved in the soutwest part of Missouri, where the Redmen were more plentiful than the whites. It was there that she traded meal and flour to the Indians, in exchange for beaded moccasins for her little ones to wear. She pulled flax, broke, spun and wove it into blankets and wove it into linen cloth for herself and children. She carded and spun the wool from the sheep, wove it into blankets and cloth that she might make her off spring comfortable. She also saw the wild forests fall before the woodman's ax.
Our subject had been a resident of this county for over fifty years, coming here Jan. 1, 1858 and had seen the wild prairies converted into fertile fields, dotted with towns and houses and traversed with railroads.
The deceased passed away at her home in this city on Monday evening, Oct. 18th, at 11:15 o'clock, exactly the same minute at which her husband expired on Dec 17, 1908, who was at that time aged 94 years, 8 months and 18 days. Our subject at her death was 87 years, 8 months, and 3 days. The ages of she and her husband combined were 181 years, which is a phenomenal record.
The deceased had resided in this city almost ten years; and had been bedfast for six months. Her condidtion became serious last Thursday and continued so until the end.
She was the mother of fifteen children, nine of whom still survive viz: David W., Chrisman; John, who lived at home; Margaret Welch; Houston, Texas; Mrs. M. J. Sours, Erie, Kan; Mrs. A. C. Hawkins, North Baltimore, Ohio; Mrs. Nancy Stanfield, Van Wert, Ohio; Joseph, Kennsett, Ark; Andrew J, near Chrisman; Mrs. Emma Wright, Paris. All of the children were present at the funeral except Joseph.
Besides the nine children, she is survived by 32 grandchildren, 30 great grandcildren, and one great great grandchild.
"Grandma" as she was familiarly known, had been a member of the Baptist church for over seventy years, was a faithful companion and a loving mother. She and her husband having lived in peace and unity for over 68 years.
The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist Church in this city on Wednesday morning at eleven o'clock, Rev. R. S. Sargent officiating and interment was made in Franklin Cemetery, the obsequies having been very largely attended.
