Benjamin Smith Benton's birth on 7 September 1759 is recorded in the Prince George's Parish. In 1776 he lived with his parents on a farm in the area now called Potomac in Mongomery County. The following year in August 1777 he served as a Private 6th Co., Lower Bal., Militia. Benjamin S. Benton
took the Oath of Allegiance before the Hon. Samuel W. Magruder in 1778. He was listed as Second Corporal 2nd Co., Lower Bal, July 1r5, 1780. He was listed as single on the 1783 assignment and living in Potomac Hundred. He as Benjamin Smith Bentening married Susana Willet/Willett on 15 May 1783.
The 1978 tax assessment for Sugarloaf and Linganore District Three of Montgomery County recorded the name of Benjamin S. Benton. Benjamin's farm was named Pleasant Plains of Damascus. "An original land tract, consisting of 1.101 acres deeded to Matthew Pigman in 174 extends from the center of Damascus on past Mullinic Mill Road. The town of Damascus was named for this land tract when it was founded in 1816. The original town consisted of fourteen lots lay in the southwestern corner of this land tract".
"Benjamin Benton moved to his 225 acre farm, near Damascus about 1792."......" Mr. Benton was an active Methodist as early as 1803 because a record in the Methodist Historical Society shows that he was a member of a Quarterly Conference in Clarksburg in that year. This indicates that he held an official position on the Montgomery Circuit at that time".....We know very little about Mr. Benton's religious activities between 1803 and 1822 when he gave the land for our first church.....It is believed that Benjamin Benton held the important position of "Class Leader" in our first church. ....Benjamin Benton had a large family. Eleven children were listed in the record at the time of his death, at least two of whom had moved westward....Benjamin Benton died 21 April 1833 and was buried in the family cemetery on his farm, not too far from his church. The cemetery has recently been destroyed and most of the tombstones are gone. However, the upper part of founder's tombstone was recovered on which is carved "In Loving Memory of Benjamin Benton." ... The stone is being preserved at our church to prevent further destruction. Some of Mr. Benton's treasured possessions which were sold after his death included a silver watch, a family bible, a small bible and numerous books and magazines.
On 13 October 1833 Nathan and William W. Benton petitioned the court to divide the lands of their father, Benjamin Benton. Info from Montgomery County Judgement Records. BS 3:269

Edward owned a plantation in Maryland, the same state where he was born. In the 1820 FREDERICK
CO MD, the following members were sorted in his family; "1m26-45; 1 f-5; 1f 16-26".
He did not agree with Maryland's slave laws and therefore, moved to Phillipsburg, PA and then to Knox and Belmont CO, OH. According to the "History and Biography, 20th Century History of Delaware Co., Ohio", Edward Willett Benton moved to Knox Co., OH after 1824 and then to Delaware Co., OH in 1829. This isn't quite right, as Edward is in the 1830 census for Belmont Co., OH with the following family members: "1 male age 5-10; 1 male age 10-15; 1 male age 40-50 and 1 female age 30-40. He is in the 1850 Census record in Scioto Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio, page 273: "BENTON, Edward W. age 66 b MD farmer, Matilda age 46 b. MD. Catherine age 20, Rebecca age 17, Mary Jane age 14, Erasmus age 12, Nancy age 7....all born in OH. He disappears from the 1860 census records onward (CL-488)
He, a few family members and descendants are buried at Newhouse Cemetery, Delaware, OH; Edw W. 1782-7/30/1868, Matilda 8/27/1868, Benj T 1824-8/25/1906, Mary K 1825-1/7/1901, J R 1855-5/13/1916, Eva 1860-1/21/1939 and Chas B 1/9/1863-1-23-1941.
A lot of this line is buried in Delaware Cemeteries.
Hannah:
Born ABT 1790
Died 1812
PLAC: 22 years old
Reference number: 15777
Susianne Hollis conjectures that Hannah had a brother named Lewis and that they lived at a place called Sugar Mountain in Maryland from some Marland deeds (C-2235)
DAR records state that Hannah is the daughter of Benjamin Duvall, a Revolutionary War Soldier. However, the c1952 book entitled "Mareen Duvall of Middle Plationtion" by Harry Wright Newman supposedly lists her as one of the youngest daughter of Lewis Duvall and a Miss Welsh. In this 2nd care, she would have a brother named Lewis. In other words, this lineage needs to be careully reviewed.
