Pauling CO has an article on William. He had horses and a race track was named after him. Also owned a tile/brick factory.
William remained on the farm until 21 years of age. In 1880 he came to Pauling CO and purchased 80 acres (present farm). Four (4) years later he organized a company consisting of himself, A. M. Bailey and W. H. Steward for the manufacture of tile and brick. In 1889 he sold to R. Barrett and Thomas Finon.
They could make 10,000 bricks and 6400 tile per day; employed 6. They had one kiln, 3 drying sheds
(100x20-100x25) and used a 10 hp motor to run the equipment

Notes from Wilkie Hughes:
William and Myrtle lived on W. R. Hughes' farm near Payne, OH, from there to Ft. Wayne, IN; then Chicago; then Belle Center, OH. Were living in Bell Center in 1908; moved from there to Bellefountain, OH, First Street.
Then to 600 Cooper St.; then to the 4 or 5 hundred block of Cooper Street; from there to 5 acres on Eastern Ave.; from there to 816 Euclid St., Bellefountain, OH; from there to west of South Bend, IN; then back to (Euclid) St. in Bellefountain; then to Columbus; then to a farm on Hackelshin Rd., South of Byington, Ohio; from there to Dayton, OH; then back to Bellefountain, OH across from the airport; then next to Mildred and Harry John's in a trailer.
After William's death Myrtle moved to a small home on Harold Hughes' property and lived there for the rest of her life.
First Family Reunion held in 1947 at W. R. Hughes, Jr. home on Glade Run Road, West of West Jefferson, OH. W. R. Hughes only attended the first reunion as death occurred the following spring.
The first four years of records were lost and started again 19 Aug 1951. Reference for the reunions is from the "Reunion Record from Aug. 19, 1951; copied by Wilkie E. Hughes".

WILLIAM R. HUGHES DIES
Former Resident of Dayton Succumbs in Home of Daughter.
William R. Hughes, 63, died at 6 a.m. Sunday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Johns, 137 Prospect Avenue. He had been ill several years of heart disease and his condition had been critical the past two weeks.
A son of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Hughes, Sr., he was born at Payne, in Paulding, in Paulding county, May 1, 1884. He was married to Cora Myrtle Benton, Dec. 25, 1905 and she remains with seven sons and daughters. They are Wilkie and Wesley Hughes of Dayton; Harold Hughes, Columbus; William Hughes, Jr., West Jefferson; Mrs. Johns, in whose home he died; Mrs. Hubert Helton, Dayton, and Mrs. Howard Kauffman, 905 Rush Avenue, Bellefontaine. There are also remaining 20 grandchildren; two brothers, Coral Hughes, of Larue and Wilkie Hughes of Williard; one half-brother, Dewey Hughes, of Detroit; one step-sister, Mrs. Nile Gephart, of Payne and one step-brother, Orla Huntuh, of Willard.
The deceased and his wife had resided in Bellefontaine upon different occasions, the last time returning about eight months ago from Dayton. In earlier life he was employed for 19 years by the Bellefontaine Bridge and Steel Company, later going to the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company in Columbus.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Kennedy Funeral Home. In charge of Rev. A. C. Crockett, pastor of the Bellefontaine Gospel Tabernacle. Burial will be made in the cemetery at Belle Center.

MRS. W. R. HUGHES DIES
Native of Northwood Area Succumbs in Columbus
Mrs. Cora Myrtle Hughes, 70, widow of W. R. Hughes, formerly of Bellefontaine, died Monday at 11 p.m. in the home of a son, Harold Hughes, 2875 Alkire Road, Columbus, with whom she resided. Death was due to a complication of diseases.
She was born Sept. 23, 1882, in the Northwood community, a daughter of Alvin and Kate Benton.
Surviving are four sons and three daughters, Wilkie Hughes, Mrs. Edna Helton, Charles Wesley Hughes, all of Dayton, William Hughes of West Jefferson. Harold Hughes in whose home she died, and Mrs. Howard (Elda) Kauffman, 913 Rush avenue,. and Mrs. Harry (Mildred) John, 137 Prospect avenue, Bellefontaine. Remaining also are 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one brother, Ben Benton, and one sister, Mrs. Iva Mummey, both of Rushsylvania.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Kennedy funeral homes in charge of Rev. Harold Wyandt. Burial will be made in Belle Center Fairview cemetery.
Friends may call Thuesday evening and until time for the service at Mrs. John's home.
